Winterhawk was formed in late 1992 by the founding member, Mark Carrillo. Mark was tired of playing other people's music and liked the idea putting together an “all originals” band with other musicians who had a similar vision. Two years later, Mark's good friend Sam Hornedo joined and the two formed a unique collaborative team of songwriting and arranging with a lot of attention placed on finding the right harmonies. After 10 years of exploring and expanding the acoustic boundaries of an Acoustic duo, Winterhawk transformed into a classic four-piece band format with the added members of Alex Jed Sejera and Steve Satnick. Winterhawk also enjoys the occasional contributing vocals of Sam’s daughter, Leia Hornedo, who adds another dimension to their vocal centric sound. The band takes the listener through the dips and valleys of the iconic Americana soundscape. The musical journey is routinely marked by the unmistakable harmonies of Mark, Sam, and Leia, which is a rich and round vocal dynamic creating Winterhawk's irresistible sound.

"I knew I wanted to play the guitar after seeing the Beatles play on Ed Sullivan as a boy. As a teen, I started writing my own songs and that became a big part of my self-expression. I've been in several bands, such as, Crash Cadillac, The Dix, Crooked Sky, One Car Garage Band, and- during my service in Germany- a band called, Free Wing. Musically, Americana is my bread and butter. And, P.S.: my hair is grey because my kid"

Sam HornedoGuitars, Bass + Vocals
"My passion has always been music. Ever since I was little, I was drawn to it. I picked up the Bass when I was 10, followed by guitar, drums and percussion. Vocally, I live in the harmonies, always singing to those parts whenever a Beatles or Eagles song came on the radio. I’ve been in various bands over the years, such as Thermal Shock, Caught in the Act, Danger Sweet, Donna Larsen and Messengers, my church band and now Winterhawk. For almost 30 years, Winterhawk has by far been the most gratifying musical experience I have had. This group of musicians are some of the most talented players I have ever played with and feel privileged to call my friends!"

"I got my first Guitar when I was 5 or 6 years old and was hooked! I started semi-professionally playing the Guitar, Bass, and Keys, at church when I was ten and started playing at different venues in my early teenage years. I have been in a multitude of bands in all sorts of different styles including: The Variety Show (Emo) , Abject (punk/ska), Beldun (Indie), and Tricky Sweet (Metal), just to name a few! Now my main role in Winterhawk is to annoy Mark and Sam, while sipping on some cervezas with my beer buddy, Steve!"

Steve SAtnickDrums + Percussion
"I started playing the Drums at age five. Growing up in a musical household in New York my early influences The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, and Elton John. Ringo Star and Nigel Ollsson taught me how to play. Although self taught, I was gigging in the bars of Long Island by age 13. I soon became captivated with the Jazz-Rock-Fusion world studying drummers like Billy Cobham, Steve Gadd, Lenny White, and of course, Neil Peart. I moved to San Diego in ‘91, and formed "Backstage Pass" (American Classic Rock) then later a second British based Rock & Pop cover band "Wolff". Eventually, I crossed paths with Mark Carrillo and Sam Hornedo of Winterhawk. I was immediately taken by the immense talent and song writing ability and joined them as their Drummer in 2019. I love the original music Mark and Sam have written over the last 20+ years. I enjoy the collaborative process of creating drum parts that enhance and compliment Winterhawks beautiful library of music.”
